The Alabama Credit Union Legislative Action Council (ACULAC), created by the Alabama Credit Union League in 1974, is the vehicle for Alabama's credit union leaders to financially support the candidacies of men and women who understand and support the credit union movement.
If you would like to contribute or find out more about ACULAC, please contact the Alabama Credit Union League.
Why do we need ACULAC? Other financial institutions, with interests very different from credit unions, actively lobby, campaign, and contribute to candidates favorable to their cause – not for credit unions. For this reason, the credit union movement in Alabama needs to do everything in our power to elect and support candidates for office that share our vision in making sure credit unions remain strong and vital.
Why be involved? Whether you realize it or not, you are already politically involved. Political ‘inaction' is just as effective as ‘action,' only it benefits the other side. Direct financial support from ACULAC is a crucial part of maintaining a strong credit union voice with our lawmakers.
ACULAC, however, cannot support candidates without first having the support of individuals from within the credit union movement. Up to this point, this has been accomplished primarily through the contributions of League staff, a few credit union CEOs/Managers, and small one-time events.
But we need to do more. Quite simply, we must do more. During past election years, there have been several candidates for the state legislature that belonged to credit unions and/or supported the credit union movement that ACULAC was unable to support because of limited funding. Other candidates supported by ACULAC were supported at lower levels of funding for the same reason.
As the leaders of the credit union movement in Alabama, we have a responsibility to each credit union member in this state to support elected officials and candidates who will stand up for credit unions and our vision.
To do this, leaders in the credit union movement must support ACULAC. The continued success of the credit union movement depends on keeping credit unions free from oppressive and harmful legislation. Not financially supporting credit union friendly candidates for office is not a viable option to accomplish that goal.
Stand up and be counted. You can start making a difference TODAY.
